Recent Observation Notes:

Wednesday March 27, 2024 - Seal walks have been good on the days when weather conditions were decent, but today the wind finally backed down and we enjoyed excellent seal observation of the most seals spotted so far this season. This is the good stuff we wait all year to see, and we plan to visit Rome Point early (2 to 3 hours before low tide at Wickford) and often in the coming weeks.

This weekend, mid-afternoon into the evening will present the best seal watching opportunities, and with westerly winds in the forecast for both days the prospects for great seal watching are encouraging. However, pleasant Spring weekend weather brings with it the possibility of watercraft activity in the area, which can spoil an otherwise perfect seal day if paddlers or boaters scare the seals away. This time of year we make an extra effort to arrive at the beach 2 to 3 hours before low tide in am attempt to to stay a step ahead of seal-watch-spoiling boats or kayaks. Check back here for reports and updated forecasts, we hope to see you on the beach soon!

We hope that anyone who reads this website holds a little grace for us when our seal observation forecasts miss the mark or our outing plans change at the last minute, however, some uncertainty is part of the wildlife observation experience. One thing we do know for certain: if you catch the seals at the right time with a telescope on hand for close-up observation, your friends or family will enjoy an experience that all will remember for years to come.

Boat-based seal tours are now departing from Wickford on the Coastal Queen and we bid these new members of the seal watching community at Rome Point a warm welcome. A cruise on the bay is a fine way to responsibly observe wild marine mammals, and the presence of a tour boat serves the best interests of the seals by causing other watercraft operators to think twice about approaching the resting seals too closely. Check out the Cruise RI website here if you are interested in a seal cruise, we are certainly interested and hope to join them on a seal cruise soon.
